My Role
There are 5 sub-teams to make the car happen: Engine, Suspension, Frame, Controls, and Drivetrain/Machining. I volunteered for Drivetrain/Machining. Drivetrain is focused on the design of all the components between the engine to the wheels, but also being the manufacturing team, we also had to manufacture all the parts for all 5 sub-teams.
My specific design responsibility decided how the drivetrain assembly will be mounted to the car (officially labelled “Diff. Cage”). In addition to my design, the lab’s HAAS ST20, CNC lathe became my sole authority on radial parts. Although this became my specialty, maintaining and organizing the entire machine shop meant running other machines and other manufacturing processes to keep up with our demanding deadlines.
