About Formula SAE
California State University Northridge
Formula SAE is a collegiate design competition that challenges students to design, build, and compete a formula style racecar. Competition is composed of an inspection, a series of design presentations, and a several race events amongst 80+ international teams.
California State University Northridge (CSUN) Formula SAE (FSAE) runs their program a little different than most schools. Typically, a student will join FSAE as a club at their school and will work on the same car for the duration of their B.S. Degree. CSUN FSAE is not a club, but a course that is divided into two sessions; The first session involves the design process, ending with a Critical Design Review (CDR); The second session brings the design into the manufacturing process and ends with testing prior to competition.
To be eligible for enrollment in this course, volunteer work prior to the course is mandatory, making the program selective. The result of this process is a new car (every school year) made from scratch so each student may earn their grade for the course (for the 1st and 2nd session).
In 2019-2020, before the shutdown, we were on course to be the first team to complete two cars (one internal combustion and one electric vehicle) in a 10 month cycle.
